Google AdSense is an advertising placement service by Google. The program is designed for website publishers who want to display targeted text, video, or image advertisements on website pages and earn money when site visitors view or click the ads.
WHAT IS ADSENSE?
AdSense is a Google tool that allows all content creators to display ads. This way, owners of websites, blogs, or YouTube channels can obtain income by reserving a space on their digital platforms for advertisers to show their advertising there.
The owners of such digital platforms have the option to choose the locations of the ads on their website, as well as their design. They can also block specific types of ads or even advertisers that do not agree with their values.
Signing up for AdSense is simpler than you think. You only need to comply with the following requirements:
– Have a Gmail account.
– Have a blog with your own domain, a website, or a YouTube channel.
– Be over 18 years old.
– Respect Google’s policies: no content that incites violence or has explicit sexual content
– Have a telephone number and a postal address.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
You’ve probably heard of Google Ads, which is the program that AdSense belongs to. Actually, AdSense wouldn’t exist without Google Ads.
The main difference between both platforms is who uses it and what it is for:
– Google Ads: This platform is used by advertisers who want to promote their products and services through the creation of advertising content. They will be able to be published on Google’s platforms, including YouTube, and in those websites that have registered in AdSense.
– AdSense: is used by website owners or content creators who want to monetize their sites by adding advertising spaces that will show the content that advertisers have created through Google Ads and charge for it.
As we can see, there are three parties involved: the advertisers, Google, and the owners of the platforms where the ads are displayed.
Google simply acts as an intermediary, taking a commission for this. The advertisers pay the search engine to advertise on their partners’ sites and the search engine pays the owners of the sites (their partners) to display them.
To decide which ads are placed on each platform, a thematic segmentation is performed to ensure that the content of the digital platforms and the ads are aligned. In this way, it automatically distributes advertising content according to criteria defined by both advertisers and site owners.
HOW, WHEN AND HOW MUCH DOES GOOGLE ADSENSE PAY?
As we’ve just explained, advertisers pay Google, and Google pays the owners of the websites that host the ads.
There are currently two ways to generate income with a blog, either with the CPC (Cost per click), the system pays you each time someone clicks on an ad, or with the CPM (Cost per thousand impressions), as you get an income according to the volume of visitors to your blog.
It will be the advertiser, when creating their banners, who will choose between these two payment systems (CPC and CPM) that Google gives them to choose. Once the payment system has been chosen, a bid is established, which is the same as what you are willing to pay for a click or for every 1000 impressions.
Regarding the money paid by advertisers, around 70% will go to the owners of the websites, while around 30% will end up in the hands of Google. This proportion changes in the case of YouTube, where the owner will receive 55% of the revenue generated.
This Google tool pays you through your bank account once a month, according to the income you have generated. To be paid, you must have reached a minimum of 100$, or 70€, on the 21st of each month.

Since it is an automatic system, you can sometimes publish ads that you do not want to have on your site. Therefore, you are offered the possibility of blocking ads or advertisers. So if you don’t want some kind of ad to appear, you can select the category or advertiser to avoid.

Both Google Ads and AdSense are the most popular SEM solutions worldwide, so they have a large base of brands interested in advertising with them.
